Sara Knook’s Birthday Pool Party and Sushi Fest

This Sunday Sarah Knook was having her official birthday party at her dad’s house in Santee. There was to be swimming in the pool and a sushi chef was coming to cater the event. I woke up at around 1pm on Sunday and made my way over to Jon Elliott’s house. We gathered up Oli Short and Jeremy Beightol and Jon drove us out to Santee. We made our way into the backyard of the house and immediately ran into Josh Petty and Brandon Campbell. Its always great to see these guys, which only seems to be once a year. There were about twenty people at the party. There was a keg of beer and bbq chicken in the house. The highlight was the Sushi chef. We had the chef create us random special rolls and he came up with some of the best rolls I have ever had. By time we left the party we were nice and drunk and completely full of fish.

My friday w/ Alpha Channel @ The Soda Bar

This past friday Lindsey came and met me at work. I called it a day and we headed to Sicilian Thing on 30th Street for a slice of pizza. Suffering from immediate food coma we decided to walk next door to Hamiltons Tavern and have a beer. Even though Hamiltons has an insanely large beer selection i usually always just have a Russia Brewing Company Damnation Ale. After our drink we headed to my house and watched TV and relaxed.

We decided to head to the Beauty Bar for Sarah Knooks early birthday party. The place was packed and the bands were not so sweet. We hung around for only about half and hour before making our way to Soda Bar to get a shot. To our surprise there was an awesome Nintendo/Atari style electro band called Alpha Channel playing. We hung out for a while and had one more shot before heading over to U31 to meet up with Joe, Breezy, Ernie, Aries and Monkey. The rest of the night was spent dancing the night away.

A BBQ at Tommy Boy’s House

I get a call last Thursday, while I am still at work, from Tommy Boy to let me know he is having a BBQ at his house. I rode home to drop off my laptop and made my way to Tommy Boy’s house in South Park. Within two blocks of riding I blew out my tube and had no spare. My friend Kevin’s apartment is just around the corner, so I made the short walk to his place and luckily his roommate Joe was there with a spare tube. I fixed my bike and Joe and I rode over to the BBQ. When we arrived, Jon Elliott, Oli Short, Jeremy Beightol and Jeff Stockwell were already there, with Cory Casey showing up shortly after.

The BBQ featured slabs of carne asada grilled to perfection. However there were no tortillas or anything else for that matter, just huge slaps of beef that were rolled up and eaten like a taco. Joe and I hung out for about an hour watching skate videos and shooting the shit with everyone before calling it a night and heading home.

My Journey to Moscow – Day 8 & 9: The voyage home…

The voyage home
At this point in my trip I am completely exhausted and near death from the worst allergies of my life. I wake up in the morning spitting up a massive amount of green vile and snot. I cleanse out my system, pack my bags and wait for Yriy to pick me up. I ended up wait quite a while because he is stuck in traffic, so I muster up the strength to go to Starbucks and get a snack and a latte. Yriy arrives and drives me to the airport. We get pulled over on the way there to have his documents checked. We make it to the airport and he escorts me to the ticket booth. Thank you Yriy for all your help while in Moscow and getting me to and from the airport, you are a great man!

I waited in line a good half and hour and checked my bags in. I made it to my terminal and charged my computer before boarding the plane and taking a muscle relaxer to help me fall asleep on my flight back. I sleep almost all the way to Washington D.C. We arrive late due to weather and eventually deboard the plane and head to customs. The customs line was insanely long and took almost an hour to get through. This meant I missed my plane to Los Angeles and had to wait for the next flight out of D.C. I end up getting to Los Angeles at 8:30pm an wait at the airport for Chris Peel to pick me up. Once he arrives we head to Union Station so I can take Amtrak to San Diego. We get lost however and by time we make it to the station the last train had just left. We drive back to Long Beach and I spend the night at Chris’s house. In the morning he drops me off at the metro station in Long Beach and I take the metro all the way to Union Station, then catch a train to San Diego and have Cory Casey pick me up when I arrive. All in all this was a real journey.

My Journey to Moscow, Russia – Day 7: The Metro

The Subway Stations
I went to bed last night with a terrible headache and woke up with it still this morning. It does not seem to be going away. After getting ready I began my day at Rollerclub, where I spent a couple of hours watching Russian skate videos with Igor and waited for Yriy to show up. Due to traffic I Yriy was running late. I decided I would just meet with him later and headed out to take a tour of the metro line. From my first day in Moscow I was really impressed by the Metro system. Opened in 1935, it is well known for the ornate design of many of its stations, which contain outstanding examples of socialist realist art.

My Journey to Moscow, Russia – Day 6: May Day!

May Day!
My allergies are killing me out here. Every morning my nose is fully clogged and it gets clogged all day. I can’t smell anything and I have the worse sinus pressure point pains. I ended up waking up at 8:30 today and just messed around on the computer for an hour before walking over to the Red Square to see what was going on for May Day. I was early because then myself it was only military and police, hundreds of them, if not near a thousand. I felt a little out of place and decided to walk along the side of the Kremlin to shoot some photos of the fountains and surrounding buildings. I made my way to a point where the road was blocked and they would not let me pass because I parade was coming. Moscow has several different groups marching on May Day, so I decided to see which group was heading my way. To my surprise it was the Communist Party’s March, full of senior citizens trying to relive the glory days and young confused conservatives wanting something they don’t understand. It was a pretty cool thing to witness I stood there for about an hour and then made my way back to my hostel to take a rest before going skating.

My Journey to Moscow, Russia – Day 5: A walk around town

Trip to Gorky Park and Sculpture Park
Yriy was going to have a busy day today and wasn’t able to hang out today. So I took the chance of being alone to see some tourist spots. I decided I would walk down Arbat Street in the direction of Gorky Park. One the way I crossed paths with another of Stalin’s fabulous skyscrapers.

My first agenda was to get coffee and food. I ordered the coffee but she didn’t understand what I wanted food wise. This meant nothing for me. I drank my coffee, and made my way down the road, where I found a small grocery store. I purchased water and some chips to hold me over until I could find something to eat. One thing that has begun to bother me about Moscow, is that it is very hard to find something to eat. Because I do not know the language most businesses almost look the same and it is hard to tell what is inside a building from the outside. With this said the only restaurants I recognize are the pancake houses and the 24hr Sushi Restaurants, which are everywhere.
